Wedding chapel NW of Minneapolis, MN

Question:

Hi Reverend Coleman,

I have found your site very helpful, especially your page on wedding chapels in the Minneapolis area. I am looking for a little old church to get married in. I was wondering if you have any ideas.

I am northwest of the metro by about a half hour and would love to find something that had space for a reception as well. I would appreciate any thoughts!

Northwest Bride

Answer:

Good evening, NWB,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

The closest solution for you is the Little Mountain Chapel in Monticello, 50 minutes NW of the metro, which is available for non-member to rent for weddings for $400. Their phone number is (763) 271-7123.

Like most churches, they don't have a reception hall (and even if they did, they most likely wouldn't allow alcohol), but the following reception sites are a block or two away:
  • Monticello Community Center
  • Monticello Country Club
  • Silver Fox Inn
I hope this email helps!

Review of the Carson Towers for weddings in MN

The Carlson Towers in Minnetonka, MN offers a gorgeous amphiteatre for wedding ceremonies (more photos below)

Question:

Re-post from a couple years ago

Dear Reverend Coleman,

We are still (frantically!) looking for a ceremony/reception site. Per your review of the Carlson Conservatory and Rotunda in Minnetonka, MN, we visited it, and although we loved the facility, we had some hesitation about the capability of the staff as well as their seemingly strict restrictions. I was wondering if you had performed any weddings at either of those locations and whether it seemed well organized and well executed? I apologize for soliiciting your advice, but we just moved here and have found it difficult to obtain objective reviews. Thank you!

New To Minnesota

Answer:

Dear NTM,

Good call on the Carlson Towers Conservatory - it's gorgeous! Yes, I've performed many wedding ceremonies there 3 times on the outside pavilion on the lake, and 1 time indoors), and had only positive experiences. The weddings I've performed there have gone extremely well and interaction from the staff has been very positive although minimal... they take a pretty hands-off approach to ceremonies there, which actually works fine for me.) I hope that opinion helps, for what it's worth!

It's too bad that Carlson has rigid policies, but usually with a big place like that, it just takes one incident several years ago for the staff to then institute a rigid rule sometimes, it's the insurance company that insists on the annoying rule), and then future couples have to work with that overly-restrictive rule. It's really too bad, but actually, that kind of rule-making is pretty common at most reception sites. If the specific rule impacts on something that is super-important to you, though, that may mean that you wind up choosing a different site... it all depends on your thoughts, ideas and the choices available.)

Usually, I advise brides to book sites really quickly basically, there are only a few reception sites in the Twin Cities, and they book up extremely fast), but since you're looking at a Sunday, that does give you more flexibility. So...my thoughts would be that if you are finding that there are many sites with availablity, then I'd recommend taking another week or two to decide. But if most other sites are booked, then I'd recommend just grabbing that site and then making the best of that site as you possibly can. There are only about 30 weekends in warm weather in Minnesota, and with the millions of Minnesota residents, those few reception sites' weekends book up EXTREMELY quickly.

Warm regards,

Rev. Tomkin Coleman

Response:

Dear Pastor Tomkin,

Thank you very much for your reply and suggestions. We have scheduled 5 tours this week so hopefully I will have a definite location and date for you next week.

I'm glad to hear that the weddings you performed at the Carlson Center went well. I had reservations about the staff because so far they have seemed slightly unorganized. I am usually not bothered by strict policies because I am pretty conservative and do not need anything out of the ordinary; it was mostly language used in the brochure describing what would happen in the instance of bad weather that bothered me.

Anyway, hopefully this week we will find the "perfect" location. I will get back to you as soon as we have something confirmed. Thanks again!

New To Minnesota

Response:

Dear NTM,

That's so great that you have five tours scheduled - you're so organized! You should be able to find a site that you really fall in love with.

As always, if you have any questions or need advice, I'm always here for you.

Wedding Pig Roast in MN

Question:

Re-post from a couple years ago:

Hi, Reverend Coleman,

I contacted you about a month ago regarding your services. I've looked on your website as well, and it's a wonderful resource for brides in Minnesota. Thank you! I'm really sorry you're not available for our date. We finally have the outdoor place - I was waiting to see if we could stay until 11:00.

I am undecided if we should do any of it inside or just do it all outside, and if we can make it all work outside. Do you have any suggestions for who could do a pig roast for us?

Love The Idea of a Pig Roast

Answer:

Dear LTIPR,

For a pig roast, check out Little Piggy Catering at 612-332-7571 (their alternate number is 952-492-5886). Little Piggy Catering has a wonderful cost calculator, too.

Another option: While I'm not sure if they do pig roasts, but for amazing food at really good prices, the best prices (and amazing food, in my opinion) I've found is TST Creating Catering. Their phone number is 651.488.0971.

For instance, here's a couple options TST offers:

-$9.50 Stuffed Canadian Pork Loin Roasted Whole Whole roasted stuffed Canadian back pork loin served with oven brown potatoes, baby carrots, tossed salad and dressing.
-$8.25 Baked Quartered Chicken served with cheesy baked potatoes, California medley & garden harvest salad.

Most catering services charge a minimum of $20/plate, and are more often $50/plate.

As you've already found, the most reasonably priced site is usually a park (although some reception sites will waive their fee if you use their catering).

If you have other questions, I'm always here for you.

Fort Snelling Chapel for wedding ceremonies

Fort Snelling's chapel is available for wedding rentals. The chapel is on the border of Minneapolis and St Paul, just north of the airport

Question:

Dear Rev. Coleman (this is actually taken from a phone call),

Hello, this is Barb from the Fort Snelling Chapel. As always, we love your write-up of our site on your page about Minnesota wedding chapels, but I noticed that it doesn't list that there are two available options for Saturday wedding ceremonies. The first slot is from 11 am - 2 pm, and the second slot is from 4 pm - 7 pm. Would you please update your page?

By the way, the chapel caretaker, Darrel, says hi!

Sincerely,

Barb

Answer:

Dear Barb,

Thank you so much for the update! I will change the page right away. Darrel is wonderful, isn't he? He knows everything about the history of Fort Snelling and its chapel, and I have the highest regard for him and his work.

Wedding site on Mississippi River in Minneapolis, MN

Question:

Dear Reverend Coleman,

I am planning a wedding with either spring (10), early summer (10) or fall (09) in mind, and I'm looking for an historic wedding venue in the Twin Cities that is in the metro area, but overlooking the river with access to an outside patio or social space. I am considering the Minnesota Boat Club on the Mississippi River in St Paul, MN primarily, but they seem to be booked up for this coming fall. Do you have any recommendations? It would be really nice to have a place that was scenic like that, but not far from the metro area.

Thank you!

Bride Searching For The Outdoors

Answer:

Good afternoon, BSFTO,

Congratulations on your engagement! The dilemma you're finding with the Minnesota Boat Club on Harriet Island on the Mississippi in St Paul is the same dilemma you'll find at all of the premiere wedding reception sites in the Twin Cities. Saturdays in warm weather just book up really fast (there's only 25 of those Saturdays, and only about a dozen premiere sites...)

However, have you heard about the Nicollet Island Pavilion in downtown Minneapolis, MN? The Nicollet Island Pavilion is right on the river, has great views, and has an outdoor patio and social space. It's right downtown, and it's gorgeous!

I hope this e-mail helps!

Wind-proof Unity Candle

Question:

Good morning, Reverend Coleman,

I think we want to include a unity candle in our wedding ceremony. We are just a little concerned that it will blow out, considering the breezes we sometimes get in Minnesota. Have you seen anyone have a unity candle in an outdoor wedding ceremony?

Outdoor Bride

Answer:

Good morning, O.B.,

Candles outside can be problematic for a wedding ceremony, as you said, because of wind. While you can't exactly have windproof Unity Candles, I've found the best solution, which works pretty well, is to use a glass sheath around each candle (often called a "hurricane globe"), such as the ones here, from Crate and Barrel. Only two candles are shown here, while you will need three - two taper candles (to light the middle candle), and one middle one (the Unity Candle). Crate and Barrel has different sizes of glass candle sheaths like these, and they just have to be taller than each candle.
  • The two taper candles don't have to be in a glass sheath, although that can be nice, too.
  • If the glass sheath for the two taper candles is tall enough, you can even place each taper candle into a candle holder, and place it the glass globe.
How you arrange the Unity candle/taper candles/glass sheaths really depends on the size of each item, but at least with this information, you're now on the right track.

I hope this e-mail helps!

Semple Mansion Wedding Fair in Minneapolis, MN

Exterior of the Semple Mansion in Minneapolis, by Franklin and Nicollet Avenue in Uptown

Question:

Hi, Reverend Coleman,

How are you? I hope you and Julie are doing well and that you had a lovely Holiday Season! I am hoping you can make it to our 2nd Annual Semple Mansion Grand Palladian Ballroom Wedding Event, again sponsored by MN Bride Magazine. This year it is March 14 & 15 from 11-3 both days. Hopefully, you will be able to stop by with your wife on one of the days. I really appreciated your feedback from last year. We are excited about it and hope it goes well. Just wanted you to save the date on your calendar!

Answer:

Dear Katherine,

Wow! Per your invitation, I just got back from our visit to the Semple Mansion Wedding Fair, and we had a great time! Not only is this one of my very favorite wedding mansions in Minnesota, but also, there were wedding vendors offering amazing services I had never even heard of (but was very excited about, once I saw them!)

Blog readers, here are the highlights:

This is the main entrance to the Semple Mansion in Minneapolis, MN. Usually the mansion is filled with tuxedoed groomsmen/ushers/fathers of the bride and groom, as well as women in gowns, but today there were hundreds of visitors checking out the hall. There was a feeling of excitement as couples got to explore all the different rooms, plus they got to talk to all sorts of vendors in a relaxed, low-pressure setting. Some of the best wedding vendors in the Twin Cities, MN area were there, giving away free cake samples, appetizer samples, espresso drinks... and even free portraits.

The award-winning wedding florist Eric Sandstrom from Floral Logic ran this table, which was packed with eager brides. Every table was busy, but it was nice that the mansion wasn't overcrowded - people just seemed to be having a great time, with lots of laughter and excited talking.

Here's one of my favorite items at the fair - the "Minnesota Cake." Here's Robin Martin From Gateaux Inc. showing off this wonderfully outrageous concoction. It's hard to show in pictures just how striking this cake was - it was a map of the state, with towns highlighted by flags labeling their location. They had many other amazing wedding cakes that I had never seen before (not in magazines, not in real life, anywhere), and they were gorgeous! Oh, and the cakes were delicious, too - Robin gave out free samples.

These guys, La Vita Espresso of Saint Paul, MN, provide an amazing service - an espresso bar for weddings (great for alcohol-free weddings, or for coffee connoisseurs). I love good coffee, but my wife, Julie, is absolutely crazy for it, and she raved about their drinks. What a great idea - many couples want an alcohol-free wedding, for instance, but still want to provide something special for their guests, and Richard Zurich, the owner, says that when they set up their machines at a wedding reception, they go, go, go, serving coffee drinks constantly all night long to wedding guests. It's a great way to really pamper your guests.

Diane Reese, from Laurel Lee Jewelry (651-468-7202 - dreese@usfamily.net ), also runs a service I had never heard of (but would be incredibly helpful to many brides). Diane had hand-created bridal gowns for years, and kept hearing complaints from brides that they would buy a gown, then buy jewelry, only to get home and find that the jewelry didn't really fit right with their gown. So she opened up her own jewelry services, where a bride will bring her wedding gown to Diane's home, and then put on their gown and try on jewelry until they find the perfect pieces to match their wedding dress. Brides have flocked to this idea, and now Diane does it full time. What a nice, relaxed way to get the right tiara, necklace, and earrings for your wedding dress!

This is one of my favorite spots in the Semple Mansion, their amazing "wine vault". The mansion converted their underground vault with a 12-inch-thick steel door (door is on the right), and into their wine cellar. Fantastic!

Note to blog readers: There were many other great wedding vendors at the Semple Wedding Fair, too (including what is probably my favorite wedding caterer in Minnesota, Fabulous Catering), but these pictures and notes can at least give you a taste of what the fair is like.

Outside catering for Minneapolis, MN wedding

Question:

Hello, Reverend Coleman,

Is it okay if I ask you a question? I am getting married in August in the Twin Cities and I need some guidance. I need a garden ceremony location in the Minneapolis, MN area that's affordable with a reception location that's affordable near by that and for around 60 people including bridal party. I have been looking for an open catering venue (to bring in my own catering from relatives) since my wedding is on an extremely tight budget.

Can you help me with advice?

Relatives Can Provide Catering

Answer:

Good afternoon, RCPC,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I completely understand your desire for a wedding reception location in Minnesota that allows outside catering, plus, you want a spot that has an outdoor area. Unfortunately, most Minnesota wedding reception locations make their money from the catering, and so they don't allow outside catering. This is especially true for the premiere wedding reception locations.

The only site I've ever heard of in the Twin Cities that allows outside catering, plus has an outdoor area, is the Waterfall View Event Center in Anoka, MN. Its outdoor area is quite beautiful, but one bride told me that they're not always good at returning phone calls, so you have to pursue them aggressively.

I hope this answer helps!

Cocktail wedding reception at Forepaugh's restaurant in St Paul, MN

Question:

Dear Rev. Coleman

I've been looking at your website about wedding reception sites for small weddings in the Minneapolis and St Paul area, and it's been very helpful. But, we don't want to have a full meal... Is it possible to have a small wedding at a restaurant, but make it just hors de oeuvres and cocktails, and NOT a full dinner?

Thank you!

Hors de oeuvres-loving Bride

Answer:

Dear HDOB,

Great question! Well, it depends on why you want an hors de oeuvres/drinks only reception.

If you want that kind of reception because it's in the afternoon, or you think your guests will mingle more if they're not sitting down, then you're golden.

But if you're having just hors de oeuvres and cocktails in order to save money, it doesn't work that way.

Restaurants have to make money, and they don't charge a high rental fee for a wedding because they assume that you're going to have dinner there. So, you can order just hors de oeuvres and cocktails (and many brides do), but there will still be a $40-$80 minimum for each guest.

This answer was provided by the wonderful Cathy Gossinger of Forepaugh's Restaurant in Saint Paul, which is in a gorgeous Victorian mansion just below the bluff, in view of the MN Science Museum. Forepaughs has several rooms for wedding ceremonies and receptions, and can accommodate anywhere from 4 to 150 wedding guests. The site is very flexible, and, as she puts it, they "have yet to turn down a wedding couple - we have always been able to accommodate them". Great place!

Note: The pricing of an hors de oeuvres/drinks-only type of wedding reception applies to bigger reception sites in Minnesota, too... except that you're working with their $8-12,000 food/beverage minimum, rather than $40-$80/person minimum (it often works out about the same, but restaurants can accomodate smaller groups). Sometimes, hors de oeuvres are more expensive than a dinner, actually, which makes sense when you think of how difficult it is, for instance, to make a plate of "Brie and Rasberry Feuille de Brick" (cheese and fruit pastries), as opposed to just making a chicken dinner. Guests can eat a lot of tasty appetizers, and the price adds up quickly.

This answer may not have given you a definitive answer, but hopefully, having this additional information is helpful in making your choice of wedding reception site!

Warmly,
Pastor Tomkin

Minnesota harpist for weddings

Question:

Rev Coleman,

I have checked your web page recommending Reuben Correa as a harpist. His music is beautiful and we would really like to choose a Harpist for our wedding, but according to his schedule on internet, he will be out of town on our date. I am just wondering whether you have known any other harpist from Minnesota who might be able to play at our wedding?

Thank you.

Music Lover

Answer:

Dear ML,

Emily Gerard is a wonderful harpist, and is very experienced. Emily has a Master's degree in playing the harp, teaches at McPhail, and has performed at over 300 wedding ceremonies. Emily doesn't have a website, but her phone number is (612) 501-6186. If she's available, Emily is a terrific choice.

Warm regards,

Pastor Tomkin Coleman

Note: This exchange was from an e-mail of a couple years ago, and since then, Emily now has an internet presence (not a website, but a nice page about her work), which is found here.

Wedding Music/chair/flowers question:

Photo courtesy of Bellagala. The following question/answer is from a few years ago, but I've re-posted it on my blog because it's interesting and informative

Question:

Dear Rev. Coleman,

We are writing from Japan, so please excuse our English. We are in need of live music, harp, flute, and violin, but if it costs high, prefer to recorded music. Do you know how much the costs? We need flower decoration for Gazebo we are using. we would like to have the ceremony Gazebo. We need some chairs for old people (our relatives coming from Japan). Do you have suggestions? Also, would we get the marriage license in the US?

Japanese Bride

Answer:

Konichiwa!

Wow, good for you for planning your wedding from so far away. Yes, I can definitely give you some great recommendations, plus advice on getting your marriage license, etc.

-If you would be interested in a Flute/Violin/Cello trio, I would highly recommend the Baroque Trio - their fee is about $425.

-If you are interested in a Harpist soloist, I recommend Reuben Correa. His fee is about $375.

Either of the above choices would work really well for your wedding ceremony, if they are within your budget. You'd most likely hire either the Flute/Violin/Cello trio, OR the Harpist soloist (but not both). If either of the above choices sound good to you, I would recommend emailing them and asking if they are available. Both of them are very professional, and I have worked with them before, and if you hire either of them, then you would basically just tell them the date and the time, and they would take care of the rest. If you mention my name, they know me.

If you would like to rent chairs for your guests, I would recommend Apres Party Rental. For an extra fee, they will deliver and set up the chairs for you (an option I highly recommend). The cost is about $2/chair, plus they would have a delivery charge.

If you would like to hire someone to set up flowers, one of my favorite Minneapolis florists is Polished Petals, but I don't know what the fee would be for setting up the flowers. You'd have to email them for a price quote. The person to contact is Erin Erskine, and if you mention my name, she knows me.

For your Minnesota marriage license, I would recommend applying for the license as soon as you arrive, then they will mail you the marriage license to wherever you are staying. You can then bring the marriage license with you to the wedding rehearsal and I will make sure that it is signed and mailed back to the county.

I hope this answer helps!

Warmly,

Pastor Tomkin
Minneapolis Weddings

p.s. As mentioned above, this question/answer is actually from a couple years ago, and I wound up performing their wedding ceremony. They wound up choosing to get married in the gazebo at Irvine Park in St Paul, MN.

Letterpress wedding invitations in St Paul, MN

100-year-old letterpresses

Pastor Tomkin's wife, Julie Coleman, took this photo of a workshop presented by Kent Aldrich of the Nomadic Press in St Paul, showing off these old-fashioned letterpresses.

Example of letterpress printing - note the three-dimensional engraving qualities, which look spectacular on wedding invitations.

Question:

Dear husband (this question was e-mailed to Tomkin from his wife),

I went to this wonderful workshop this morning, which was put on by Kent Aldrich at the Nomadic Press in Saint Paul, and it showed how to print up text with an old-fashioned letter-press. Letter-press produces documents that have three-dimensional raised ink, all created by hand. The result is very old-fashioned and classy.

Kent has been in business for about 20 years and does absolutely gorgeous work on letter presses (some of which are more than 100 years old!). He's a really nice guy and very easy to work with. You will need to have your invitations designed before Kent prints them. I suggest working with Kathy Forss at Daisy Mae Design. Kathy does clean, contemporary, beautiful design work and is really friendly and fun.

The possibilities for wedding invitations are amazing! The Nomadic Press doesn't have a website (isn't that odd? They're very old-school), but they're located at 878 Stryker Ave in St Paul, MN, and their phone number is (651) 291-1454.

Would you please feature them in your blog?

Sincerely,
Your Wife

Answer:

Dear Julie (I mean, YF),

Thank you, my darling, I would love to feature them. I hope my readers like the letterpress invitations as much as you do!

Minister for Chinese weddings in Minneapolis, MN

Question:

Hello, Rev. Coleman,

My name is Sarah Trotter, and I am the wedding coordinator from Lasting Impressions Weddings. I am helping a client plan a Sept. 5th wedding. We would like to find an officiant who speaks both English and Mandarin. Let me know if you are able to speak Mandarin.

Whether you can or not, I look forward to working with you in some capacity soon!

Thanks,

Sarah
Lasting Impressions Weddings and Events

Answer:

Ni hao ma, Sarah,

While I don't speak Mandarin, I have actually performed several wedding ceremonies for Chinese couples (usually, a civil ceremony at their reception, although sometimes they want a more "American-style" wedding).

However, in your case, I highly recommend calling the Twin Cities Chinese Evangelical Free Church at 763-420-6504. They have several ministers, some of whom speak both English and Mandarin (and Cantonese, too).

Note: They don't have their own space, but rather, hold their services at the First Baptist Church, 1021 Hennepin Avenue.

I'm sure one of the ministers could help!

Warmly,

Follow-up:

Dear Rev. Coleman,

Oh, thank you very much for your help! I will see whom I can find!

I love your website, it is very informative!

iPod Wedding Reception in Minnesota

Question:

Dear Rev. Coleman,

Would you perhaps be able to help me out with a question? We'd like to have a DJ at our wedding, we'd really rather just use our iPod for the wedding music.

You have a wonderful page on wedding music in Minnesota, but do you have any ideas for DJing the wedding oneself?

DIY Ipod Bride

Answer:

Dear D.I.B.,

Having an iPod is great, but you need more than that - you need speakers and amplifiers, and not just the kind that you'd have in your home stereo. But can rent the equipment you need. A real DJ costs $600-$1200 or so, but you can rent the equipment for a little more than a hundred bucks (you have to set it up yourself, though).

You can rent 2 450-watt speakers (you need that much to fill a big room), plus a mixer (amplifier), plus the cords and other such things, for $108 from Event Sound and Lighting. For $100 more, they'll rent lights, too. Or, for $500, they'll come up and set it all up for you, which can be nice because you'll be pretty busy on your wedding day! But if you have a buddy who always wanted to be a DJ, and you have an iPod full of songs, this is can be an option for "Do It Yourself DJing". Note that their website doesn't have this information on it, but I talked to Jim at Event Sound and Lighting, and he was the one who gave me these figures. Their phone number is 952-830-0506.

Note: This DIY/iPod system works really well for background music, but you'd want a professional to run it if you are using it for your wedding ceremony (processional, recessional, etc.). DJing for a wedding ceremony is rather tricky, actually, i.e. coming in and out and the right time, making sure it's on the right song, getting the right levels, etc. Event Sound & Lighting charges $7-800 for DJing a ceremony. Of course, if you're using live music for your wedding ceremony, and there's no dancing at your reception and you just want background music for dinner, then having a friend set your iPod with rented equipment for background music can be a great option!

I hope this helps!

Warmly,

Info about Fort Snelling Club and the Officer's Club for weddings

Question:
