Whether your wedding has 20 or 200 guests, it can be nice to set up a seating chart, and here's why: I realize that having a seating chart might seem too formal, and you might want things to be less stuffy. BUT - having a seating chart actually helps make the evening easier for your guests. A wedding isn't like a normal dinner party - there are so many guests that if there isn't a seating chart, guests that aren't the first to show up often wind up getting lousy seats.

Why I recommend a seating chart, even for more informal wedding receptions: To start off with, your wedding caterer will set the tables ahead of time, often in tables of 6, or 8, or 10, so, which means that unless everything is planned ahead of time, someone is going to be bummed out.
  • Example A: Aunt Margaret and Uncle Joe show up at the wedding reception with their three children, and there's no seating chart, they may find that all the tables are half-full, and thus there's no room for them to sit together. They'll have to split up the family among two tables (which may not even be near each other), whereas if there was a seating chart, they would have been able to sit together.
  • Example B: Bob and Jane, friends from your college, arrive at the reception, and look for the "college table" where all their friends are sitting. But becaue everything is disorganized, all their friends are spread out, and they can't all sit together.
  • Example C: Single woman shows up, has to sit with seven of her aunts. In a proper wedding seating chart, each table has half men and half women, and she probably would have been seated with other single people. After all, you want your guests to have as much fun as possible!
Bonus: Your seating chart = guest list. The other reason a seating chart is helpful is for planning how many guests you want, and which ones. With  a seating chart, you can visualize the "college friends", the "groom's family", the "bride's family from Germany", etc., and thus the seating chart can be a great way to make your guest list!
